We get this question almost every week, usually from an adult child calling about a parent. The short answer is yes — chiropractic care is one of the safer interventions in conservative musculoskeletal medicine for older adults, when the technique is matched to the patient.
What we don't do
We don't use high-velocity manual adjustments on patients with confirmed or suspected osteoporosis. We don't twist a 78-year-old spine the same way we twist a 28-year-old's. And we don't adjust at all without a thorough exam and, when warranted, current imaging.
What we do
- Drop-table technique — the table does the work, you don't get rotated
- Instrument-assisted adjustments (Activator, Impulse) — a measured, low-force impulse with no twisting
- Soft-tissue work and joint mobilizations — restore range without forceful manipulation
- Posture and balance work — usually the bigger win for this age group long term
